Sri Vadivazhagiya Perumal, Anbil (DD 5)16 May 2021
Once a Sage was doing penance in river Cauvery. When Sage Durvasa passed by this side, the Sage who was doing penance did not notice the presence of Sage Durvasa and was deep in his penance. Annoyed by his behaviour, Sage Durvasa cursed the Sage to be a Mandooka, meaning a Frog. Hence, the Sage came to be known as Sage Mandooka.
Due to his continued penance and prayers, he was absolved at this place by the Lord’s mercy.
A very unique thing about this temple is Goddess Mahalakshmi who is always seated at every temple is seen here in standing posture and has the title “Sri Azhagiyavalli Nachiyar”.
Lord Sri Vadivazhagiya Nambi is seen lying on His celestial serpent bed, Adisesha facing East.
The temple is on the other side of Cauvery where “ Sri Appakudathan” temple is located.
Anbil is among the “Pancha ranga Sthalams” – Five Abodes of Lord Ranganatha, Sriman Narayana in reclining form on Adisesha. The other four being Adi Rangam (Sri Rangapatna, Mysore, Karnataka), Srirangam, Koviladi and Mayavaram.
Here’s a short pravachanam / upanyasam (in Tamil) by Shri. Velukkudi Krishnan about this temple.
