King Dinakaran, who once ruled Kalinganadu with Maninagaram as capital was severely displaced due to Lord Shani’s 7 1/2 year spell. His son, Prince Chandravadanan performed penance in a dense forest which included Sandal, Senbaga and Kingu trees on the banks of river Surabhi.

Moved by his devotion, Lord Shani appeared here and blessed the Prince and his father. The place where the Lord appeared – on a rock – is considered the deity Himself. Thousands of devotees visit the temple, take a dip at the river which comes from Periyar River and Suruliyaru and offer prayers to Lord.

Other than Shani Shingnapur, this is another temple where Lord Shani is the presiding deity Himself. The temple is located on the way from Theni town to Chinnannur, in Tamil Nadu.
