Sri. Jagath Rakshaga Swamy, Thirukoodalur (DD 8)24 May 2021
Also known as Aduthurai, the Lord here is known as Sri Jagath Rakshagan, Thiru Vayam kaatha perumal (in Tamil). The Lord is said to have saved the world. Here’s how.
When Goddess Lakshmi was kept deep under the 7 worlds, Sriman Narayana took the form of Lord Varaha (wild boar) and rescued Her. The place where he came up to Earth’s surface is Srimushnam while this is the place where HE dug and went inside the Pathala Lokas.
This is also a temple where King ambarisha is said to have prayed who used to fast fervently on Ekadeshi day. Once on Dwadashi day, Sage Durvasa came to his place. When the Sage had still not returned after his morning dip and pujas, he took a sip of water to complete his fast. Enraged, Sage Durvasa decided to curse him. That’s when Sri Sudarshana, whom Lord Vishnu had kept along with the King chased the Sage across all the 14 worlds. Finally, when the Sage reached Vaikunta, Lord Vishnu said HE cannot do anything and rather, the Sage should take salvage from Ambarisha only citing the anecdote that if a person commits a fault on God, he must go to God but when a person commits a fault on to a devotee, only the devotee can rescue and salvage him.
Later King Ambarisha is said to have built this huge temple during his times. For the record, Kind Ambarisha’s times were before that of Lord Rama during the Treta Yuga. Over time, the temple was demolished during floods although the idols remained safely alongside river Cauvery.
Therefore, the Lord here is seen with “Prayoga Chakra” meaning He will send His Sudarshana whenever a devotee is in distress.
One day, when there was an Utsava happening here, Lord Hanuman was passing by and danced here and is seen here in the same dance form.
Queen Mangamma, who ruled this part of the country is said to have restored it to its current glory during her times after the Lord appeared in her dreams and directed her to do so. Her statue is also seen inside the temple premises.
Here’s a short pravachanam / upanyasam (in Tamil) by Shri. Velukkudi Krishnan about this temple.
