Uraiyur was once the capital of the Chola Kings where King Nanda Chola found a baby on a Lotus pond, named Her Kamalavalli – Kamala meaning lotus in Sanskrit / Tamil and raised Her well. One day while playing, Kamalavalli spotted a Man riding a horse. The Lord appeared in the King’s dream and asked him to get his daughter married off to him at Srirangam.

Lord Azhagiya Manavalan, who is none other than Lord Sri Namperumal of Srirangam, married Goddess Kamalavalli Nachiyar here on the sixth day of the Phalguna / Panguni month.

In this Temple, The Lord and His consort are facing North, i.e. towards Srirangam. Usually, Kumkuma is offered at Sri Vishnu Temples but here, Sandal paste is offered.

This is also the birth place of Thiruppanalwar, one of the 12 Alwars of the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
