Sri Ahobila Narasimhar (DD105)

When the Four Brahma Kumaras Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana and Santhkumara visited Sri Vaikunta, the celestial abode where Lord Sriman Narayana resides, the two Dwara Palakas – the guards of the Lord “Jaya – Vijaya” refused entry inside. Angered, the Sages cursed the two guards. The two pleaded mercies but the Sages wouldn’t agree. So, they rushed to Lord Narayana who replied that even HE cannot undo the curse laid by the Sages and they must go through the same. However, since they both have been serving HIM eternally, HE agreed to give them a slight tweak to the curse.

They may be born One Hundred times as Humans, mere mortals on Earth and go through their lifetimes to come back to Sri Vaikunta or be born as Asuras thrice and be killed in the hands of the Lord and return faster. The two pleaded for the latter. Thus, Jaya-Vijaya were born in the three yugas as Hiranyaksha & Hiranyakashipu in the Krita Yuga, as Ravana and Kumbhakarna in Treta Yuga and as Shishupala and Dantavakra in Dwapara Yuga. In all three Yugas, they were killed by the Lord in His various incarnations and returned back to Sri Vaikunta.

During the Krita Yuga, both brothers undertook deep penance and pleased with them, Lord Brahma appeared to Hiranyaksha and agreed to give him a boon. The Asura King asked – That he should rule all the 14 worlds; that he should never be harmed or killed by a human or an animal; a weapon or by hands; in the jungle or in a city; on the ground or in air; in the morning or evening; inside or outside; with this he left almost no chance for his end. Finally, he prayed that he should not be killed by anything that was created by Lord Brahma; To this, Lord Brahma sighed a relief and offered all the boons to Hiranyaksha.

Years passed by. The King threatened and abused everyone in the 14 worlds that he controlled. The Devas were at his mercy and his rule was the rule of might at the time. He abused the creator Lord Maha Vishnu and said there was no other God than the King himself as he had all the powers that a God like Vishnu had.

Over time, the King had three sons. The youngest of them was Prahlada. When it was time for the kid to attend scholarly education by Sages, the child recited and reiterated that Lord Sriman Narayana was the only God. Being a benevolent father, he made the child understand that he was a lot more powerful than the God, but the child refused to accept. This angered the King, and he tortured the little one. He rolled the child from the top of hills, but nothing happened. He poisoned the child, nothing happened. He aimed lions and elephants to kill the child, no respite. Finally, the king asked the Child where the Lord can be seen to which the child replied that HE can be seen everywhere and anywhere.

When the King broke a pillar with his “gadha”, the pillar split in to two and there appeared a very angry man with the head of a Lion who pulled the king, laid him on his lap, sat on the doorstep of his palace during the sunset time at dusk and ripped him apart with the sharp nails of a lion. Thus, the Lord ensured all boons granted by Lord Brahma were adhered to, except that Sriman Narayana was not created by Lord Brahma. Thus, the Nara-Simha incarnation was enacted.

The place this occurred is known as Ahobilam. Here, there are Nine shrines of the lord. The area is split in to two – lower Ahobilam and Upper Ahobilam (in the hills). There are five shrines in lower Ahobilam and four in the Hills. At the top most portion of the Hill, one can see the “Ugra Sthamba” – the pillar which split and from where the Lord appeared.

One of the most important places in the Hills is the Prahlada Cave” where a Lion caught the little boy when he was rolled over from the top of the hill and placed him here securely.

It is quite an arduous task to cluimb the Upper Ahobilam which is manifested within deep jungles, yet thousands of pilgrims visit the place every year.
